Controlling mode locking in optical ring cavities

چکیده
Imperfections in the surface of intracavity elements of an optical ring resonator can scatter light from one mode into the counterpropagating mode. The phase-locking of the cavity modes induced by this backscat-tering is a well-known example that notoriously afflicts laser gyroscopes and similar active systems. We experimentally show how backscattering can be circumvented in a unidirectionally operated ring cavity either by an appropriate choice of the resonant cavity mode or by active feedback control.

2-ps, 10-GHz mode-locked laser with semiconductor optical amp, ring cavity, and sinusoidally modulated light injection
In new optical pulse generator using delayedinterference-signal-wavelength-converter (DISC)-type all-optical gate, we injected sinusoidally modulated light to ring cavity. With this way, externally modulated laser oscillation and mode-locked pulse laser oscillation occurred. These generated pulse’s widths and repetition frequencies are 27 ps, 10.5 GHz and 2.1 ps, 10.5 GHz, respectively. Keyword...
متن کاملSwitchable multi-wavelength Tm-doped mode-locked fiber laser.
We propose and demonstrate for the first time a switchable tri-wavelength Tm-doped ultra-fast fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) technique. The NPE effect induces wavelength-dependent loss in the cavity that changes the homogeneous broadening of the effective gain to become inhomogeneous. This inhomogeneous effective gain spectral profile enables the multi-wavelength mo...
متن کاملSub-picosecond pulse generation employing an SOA-based nonlinear polarization switch in a ring cavity.
We demonstrate the generation of sub-picosecond optical pulses using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and a linear polarizer placed in a ring-laser configuration. Nonlinear polarization rotation in the SOA serves as the passive mode-locking mechanism. The ring cavity generates pulses with duration below 800 fs (FWHM) at a repetition rate of 14 MHz. The time -bandwidth product is 0.48. Si...

A Kerr-lens mode-locked femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser operating at a repetition rate of 2 GHz is demonstrated. A mirror-dispersion-controlled unidirectional ring cavity delivers nearly bandwidth-limited pulses of 23-fs length. Mode locking is self-starting without a hard aperture in the cavity. The advantages of this high-repetition-rate oscillator in optical time-resolved spectroscopy are demo...
متن کاملTunable and switchable dual-wavelength Tm-doped mode-locked fiber laser by nonlinear polarization evolution.
We propose and demonstrate a tunable and switchable dual-wavelength ultra-fast Tm-doped fiber laser. The tunability is based on nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) technique in a passively mode-locked laser cavity. The NPE effect induces wavelength-dependent loss in the cavity to effectively alleviate mode competition and enables the multiwavelength mode locking. The laser exhibits tunable d...
